The First Woman to Go Pro

Patti McGee is one of , if not Americas first notable female skate boarders. She started skating when she was on 11 years old on a plank of wood with four wheels made by her brother. Back in the 1950s people were still figuring out skating and so was Patti. She was always the only girl in the skating groups she came across but she didn't let that stop her on her road to greatness. In 1964 Patti attended the first annual national skating boarding championship and won first place. Only a year later she went pro and became the very first professional female skateboarder. Shortly after she was captured hitting her iconic handstand skateboarding trick for the cover of TIME magazine. She gained a platform and used it to advocate for change in the skateboarding community for women, fighting for acceptance and inclusion for females. In 2010 Patti achieved yet another title being the first women in the skateboarding hall of fame. Patti McGee ollied, kick flipped and handstood her way to victory in 1964 leading many skaters such as Alexis Sable, Margielyn Didal and Samarria Brevard. Together they have made skateboarding a safe possibility for all genders.
